Controlled Digital Lending: Risks and Rewards (Georgia Library Association) Online
Controlled digital lending (CDL) is an alternative for inter-library loan that is aligned with librarians’ desire to provide resources to patrons, especially when they own a copy of the resource requested. Recent court decisions (such as Hachette v. Internet Archive) are causing librarians to revisit CDL, and they are evaluating whether CDL continues to be a viable alternative. This session will explain CDL, including the risks and rewards associated with it. Participants will explore the pros and cons of engaging in or continuing their CDL efforts and will receive an overview of how a statewide academic library consortium, PASCAL, is working with its member libraries to carefully consider CDL.
